THIRTY-TWO

MY TIMING was nearly perfect. It was 11:09 when I let us into the mansion, so Regan would have been down from the chapel for eight minutes or so. Usually, when I’m not there to go through the mail for him, Ernie leaves it unopened on his desk, and he attacks it right away, leaving a mess of papers there for me to clean up later. With any luck he’d have polished the mail off, leaving him the time and energy to lend an ear to Jake. I just hoped he wouldn’t be in one of his snits and refuse to talk to him, making the trip a waste of time. Not to mention twenty bucks.

I stashed Jake in my office, tapped on the Bishop’s door and got the command to enter. As soon as I did, I saw he was running behind schedule, still adjusting the drapes of the south window. I’d adjusted them perfectly, just the way he likes them, at eight-fifteen, before leaving the house. Naturally, he was changing them, just to show he was still in charge around here.

“Yes, David. Anything to report?”

Good. He was on track, not in a snit. “Yeah, as a matter of fact, I do. Brought a guy for you to talk to. You’ll be glad to know it’s someone who can place our boy at the scene of the crime. Speaking of our boy, I just saw him. He’s fine.”

“Good. Now. Whom have you brought?”

“That boozer from the bar across the street from where Nick was murdered. The one Jim says he saw in the window. He recognized Jim from his picture. At least I think he did.”

Regan nodded and wheeled toward his desk. “Name?”

“Jake.”

The Bishop shook his head disgustedly. “Mr. Goldman. Can you imagine me addressing this man — or, on a first encounter, anyone — as Jake?”

I grinned. “Touche. I don’t know his last name but I’ll find it out. Right away. So is it okay if I go get him?”

No objections. Back in my office, Jake was trying to pace and finding it impossible, due to insufficient space.

“What the hell, buddy, a guy could die of thirst around here! If you haven’t got any bourbon or good beer, I’ll take the mouthwash. You’re all blow and no — ”

“Come on!” I grinned. “Be fair. I’ve already given you a twenty, right? I just had to clear the decks with the Bishop. Regan’s his last name, by the way. He wants to know yours. He refuses to call anyone by their first name.”

“Steiner. But what’s that got to do with — ?”

“Excuse me, Jake, but let me suggest something. I’ll take you in there, introduce you to the man. Then I’ll bring you a bump and a beer. And, to show my good faith, I’ll leave the bottle of bourbon beside you, so you won’t have to go thirsty again.”

Jake’s face lighted up and he followed me into the Bishop’s office. I heard his slight intake of breath as
